Denice Barlow Brown is an award-winning illustrator, artist and author. While most days she can be found creating alongside her many muses, she took a long and winding road to her current journey as “artist.” Through many varied endeavors both creative and business related – including wedding photographer, freelance writer, public speaker, and having her own line of scrapbook products, among others – she has learned the value of listening closely to the truth inside ourselves and allowing it to guide our creative path.

She is passionate about celebrating the creative sparks that light up her life, honoring her personal truths, and dancing under the stars as often as possible. She is mama to nine rather awesome and intensely creative people and makes her home with her cartoonist-writer husband on a very little farm in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.

Create Your True North

Uncover your secret muse as we use free writing, color, mixed-media, collage and art journal exercises to unearth your deepest values. We will go deep, beyond the surface values we have assumed, to dig into our hearts and unearth the mysteries and dreams at our core. We will play and get messy as we use art to discover our truest passions and uncover and explore new creative paths while simultaneously honoring our present roles, embracing where we are while setting an intentional path for our future. If you are rediscovering creativity, this class is for you; if you are well on your way and seeking tools to more fully honor your own inner compass, this class is for you; and if you are looking for ways to know yourself better, get “unstuck” and find your creative direction, this class is for you, too.

Whether you are brand new to art journaling or have stacks of completed works, you will learn new tips and tricks to make art journaling more joyful, more unique, and more fully yours than ever before. Learn ways to create and find supplies without breaking the bank, and learn new uses for supplies you have on hand. Learn to love your own drawing style, no matter your skill level, and get tips for loving your own hand lettering. We’ll carve, paint, stamp, glue, and draw our way to new ideas for incorporating more of your soul into your art journal without stockpiling supplies you’ll never use. Marisa Anne is an artist living in Los Angeles, California.
Always drawn to a creative life, Marisa decided to get a degree in Advertising instead of Fine Art because she didn't think she could make a living as an artist. {As it turns out she was wrong}
Working as a both a graphic designer and interior designer in the early part of her career, Marisa also studied acting and improvisation at the Groundlings School and Theater in Los Angeles. She credits Improv, and the small intention she set while working full time; to be more creative just one day a week {on Thursdays of course}, as the catalyst to helping her finally trust her own creative voice.
Once she decided to take that leap, she found her way back to what she truly loves, working in all mediums, from acrylic painting, to sculpting, to writing, to textile creations and design.
Oh and that small intention also grew into a full time business called Creative Thursday that is now home to a cast of characters who wear hats, hold hands and encourage you to follow your dreams too.
Marisa’s art work sells all over the world via select galleries and her own online shop, as well as Urban Outfitters, Papyrus, and the Land of Nod. Her first fabric line was just released in the Spring of 2011.
Passionate about encouraging others to live a life they love, especially creatively Marisa teaches, speaks and is also the voice of the Creative Thursday blog and
podcasts.

Liz Kalloch is a painter and designer and as an artist she is enchanted with the little details: the veins in a rock, all the different “browns” that come together to make brown hair, and how in such very different ways, we all use our hands to talk.

"I believe we all have our own very individual life purpose. I believe that colour can change a moment, a life. I believe that when we stop long enough to listen to that still and quiet inner voice, we can do anything we choose.

My current work is about what we might call the smaller moments: Moments that may not feel like much of anything as they pass us by — a breeze that blows back your hair and makes you turn to see a bird flying at some crazy reckless angle; dropping something on the ground and bending over to pick it up, realise there is a miraculously beautiful doodle painted onto the base of a sign post — chance encounters that sparkle briefly and are often forgotten, like dreams slipping away when waking. I make lists of these moments and return to them when I am sitting down to paint. These moment-memories are then combined with symbols, colour, patterns, flowers and a tableau is created to keep the moment alive.

My desire as a teacher is to inspire students to fully stop, find their own voice deep inside and begin to notice their world—taking note of the things that thrill them, the moments that make them feel most alive, the feelings that give them the most energy, and to take what I call these Observing Tools and use them to find the power in their own deep artistic expression and then to create. "

Art Treasure Pendants and Charms

This is a 2-day class on creating art for a resin pendant. Using pieces of your paintings - or an original miniature you will create in class - photographs, art papers, and found objects you will create an original piece of art to wear. A piece that will bring meaning and joy to you each time you put it on.

Friday Morning Class: We will spend the first morning thinking and working small, 1.25” round to start—creating an original piece of art to be set into the pendant bezel provided in your Student Kit. Your piece can be collaged, painted, mixed media-d, or really anything that your imagination can dream up that will fit into the bezel.

Saturday Morning Class: Our second class will be spent learning about the properties of ICE resin and learning to prepare your artwork for the resin pour, and then pouring and curing the resin. For those of you who want to add dimensionality to your piece we will look at adding beads, flat back cabochons, vintage papers, brass stampings, tiny shells, etc.

For those that would like to bring a finished piece of art and just learn the resin process, you can sign up for the second class only. Please bring print outs of your art or photography, or an original piece already created that can be cut to fit into the 1-3/16” (30mm) bezel interior provided to you in the Student Kit.

Also, bring some extra images to play with. If you are taking the second class only, please note that we will not be focusing on creating your image, just the lead up to pouring the resin.

In your Student Kit I will be providing you with a few extra bezels in different shapes and sizes that will be pewter based. So keep in mind that you will be able to make a few other pendants in class, time allowing.

Class materials will include:

  •  1 - 24” chain in antique brass, and jump ring
  • 1 - 1.5” (37mm) pendant in antique brass with a 1-3/16” (30mm) bezel opening for your art
  • 2 additional pewter bezels in random shapes and sizes, beads, small ephemera, and charms
  • Disposable latex gloves
Students will be provided with the following tools to use while in class:
  •  hole punches to size art for the bezel
  • ICE Resin and all tools needed for mixing and pouring resin
  • acrylic paint and some student brushes
  • Mod Podge
  • Xacto Knives

Some Supplies you will need to bring:
  •  A selection of your favourite papers
  • Small collage elements like : ephemera, watch parts, beads, pressed flowers, glass rhinestones, old jewelry bits,
  • charms, and any other small teasures or trinkets you might like to use

Sarah Stevenson's journey as a creative started as a child with her family in Australia. "Exposure to art museums, ballet, and even modeling my Aunts sisters children's clothing line gave me a unique perspective of design at a young age. I moved to the US when I was 10 and lived in central Illinois. From their I moved away to college to study interior design and met the love of my life....my husband (we have been married for 21 years) After college we moved to Chicago where I had the privilege of working for a top interiors firm that focused on Fortune 500 companies and their desire to be at the forefront of design and sustainability in their industry. In the year 2000, my family moved west to Nevada and the region surrounding Lake Tahoe.

Now, I teach creative design and art courses to adults and children. I am a registered interior designer tapping back into my own creativity and helping others along their creativity journey as well. I am the founder and owner of redlinedesign® a design, photography and educational studio in the Reno/Tahoe area. I love all aspects of design and creativity and don't limit myself to any one medium... but my favorite at the moment is photography and using my camera to view the world around me. My daughters friend said on a car ride this summer: "you really have a unique way of finding things that others wouldn't see at all..." That is what I bring to my teaching...take a look around you, see the world in a different way and experience something you may not have noticed before..."
